Located 125 mi (200 km) northeast of Pierre in Brown County, Aberdeen is a small
city with a big, friendly midwestern personality reminiscent of the old prairie
days. Established to serve new railroads in the early 1880s, Aberdeen was once
home to the Wizard of Oz author, L. Frank Baum, and is today a modern center that
boasts strong agricultural, manufacturing and service industries. Visitors to
this lively little city will enjoy browsing an array of shops and cultural sights,
and taking time out at one of its relaxing restaurants. Strolling the landscaped
grounds of the Northern
State University is a must-do activity, as is a visit to Wylie
Park–an expanse of rolling grasslands and recreation areas and home to
Storybook
Land, Thunder
Road Family Fun Park and a zoo. For a historical perspective, the Dacotah
Prairie Museum brings the city's heritage to life, while the annual Brown
County Fair melds the past with the present and future. Heading out of the
city center, Aberdeen is known for excellent pheasant hunting opportunities, and
situated just 15 minutes from Mina and Richmond Lakes, offers rewarding fishing
experiences too.
