Brookings, SD at a Glance
Untitled Document
The fifth largest city in South
Dakota, Brookings is located approximately halfway between Winnipeg
and Kansas City, and is home
to the historic South
Dakota State University. Established in 1879 with the laying of the railway,
Brookings is now a hub of education, art and agriculture, and visitors strolling
its streets are immediately absorbed into its culture and history. Within the
downtown core, impressive monuments to the past such as the Carnegie
Library and Brookings
County Courthouse stand proud, while peaceful residential areas are home to
numerous historical houses of notable architectural styles. The traditions of
Brooking's rural heritage are kept alive at the South
Dakota State Agricultural Heritage Museum, and the university's 65-acre McCrory
Gardens offer a picture-perfect countryside experience in the fresh outdoors.
The university also plays host to the South
Dakota Art Museum and Performing
Arts Center, both popular venues for the city's creative souls. For those
who just want to bond with Mother Nature in the South Dakotan wilderness, the
many lakes in the Brookings County area offer breathtaking fishing and scenery.
