Sprouting from the plains, the hills of Sica Hollow State Park entice visitors to the 15 mi (24 km) of horse and hiking trails that wind through the woods. The Trail of the Spirits, a National Recreation Trail, features mysterious red bogs, glow-in-the-dark stumps and small waterfalls. Originally a frontier army outpost, this 1864 fort site is a National Historic Landmark and features restored buildings, including officers' quarters, stone barracks and a guard house. Guided walking tours are available. The picturesque grounds are situated next to Kettle Lake and offer camping in tents, teepees and cabins.
