    Newton Hills State Park

    Part of the Coteau des Prairie plateau, Newton Hills State Park features unique dark forest and rolling hills and is the perfect setting for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Over 200 species of birds, white-tailed deer, marmots, foxes and rabbits call this state park home. Over 100 campsites, a few cabins and a lodge provide accommodation in the park and horseback riders can make use of the equestrian camp. Boating and swimming is accessible at Lake Lakota.

    Oakwood Lakes State Park

    Beaver Creek Nature Area

    Popular among hikers and canoers, Big Sioux Recreation Area offers over 7 mi (11 km) of trails winding along the river which travels 2 mi (3.2 km) through the park. Canoe and kayak launching facilities are available. Archery, biking and cross-country skiing are also popular activities at Big Sioux Recreation Area, which is located 4 mi (6.4 km) southwest of Brandon. Year-round camping is available.

    Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve
    Doubling as both a nature and historical experience, this preserve spans 1,500 acres (607 ha) along the Missouri River and features more than 10 mi (16 km) of trails, native plants, a variety of birds and wildlife, and restored buildings that include the main homestead, a schoolhouse, church and log cabin.     Fort Sisseton State Historical Park

    Palisades State Park

    Dramatic cliffs line Split Rock Creek which flows through Palisades State Park, located near Garretson. Legend tells that Jesse James and his gang hid in a cave on Split Rock Creek after robbing a Minnesota bank. Located on the southern edge of the Coteau des Prairies plateau, the river is not the only impressive part of this park's geological landscape. Various hiking trails lead to historic sites and stunning views and canoeing is a popular activity on the river. A small seasonal campground and year round cabins are available in the park.

    Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum
